~ Phase In ~
We want every child’s first experience at Kinder Haus to be as pleasant as possible for him/her. We found that phasing in our new students is a unique way to reduce separation anxiety.
During the phase in, the parent or trusted adult accompanies the child while he/she becomes comfortable with the staff and his/her new environment. To help your child be successful, here are things you need to know:
- Arrange care for siblings. Please do not bring other children along.
- Place a chair in a quiet area of the class away from the work.
- Sit and read a book, magazine, paper, cross stitch, etc.
- Reassure your child that you will stay right there. NEVER push your child away.
- The teachers will work on getting your child involved in work or group time. Please do not work with your child.
- The environment is set up for children to explore on his/her own. Do not be alarmed if the teachers are not with your child constantly.
- The teachers will take cues from your child when he/she is ready to interact. She will then show your child where things go in the class.
- The teacher will cue you in when she would like you to leave for a short period of time.
- Cheerfully tell your child goodbye and tell him/her you will be right back.
Once a child has a happy morning then lunch can be added (this is for our (9:00-3:00 and our 6:30-6:00 children), when the child is happy through lunch then the child can stay for nap. It is important that the parent be readily available during the first days of the child staying for nap in case the child does not fall asleep, is unhappy and disruptive.
Since we look to the child in order to meet his/her needs, every phase-in progesses differently. A gentle relaxed “phase in” is in the child’s best interest.
Thank you for your cooperation.
