Gift of a Pig

Flock of Hope to a family in China

Your gift of a Flock of Hope will include chicks, ducklings and goslings that will grow up to lay precious eggs that mean hope and increasing health and prosperity for hungry families from the Philippines to Rwanda. Eggs add vital protein to malnourished families’ diets, and droppings provide a wonderful natural fertilizer to improve crop yields. Over time as the flocks grow, families can sell the surplus eggs and produce at market and use the extra income to send children to school, build secure housing and more!

Gift of Hope

Gift of a pig to a family in India

Heifer animals are like “living savings accounts” for struggling families, and the pig may well be the most interest-bearing.Each gift can give a valuable source of protein, income from the sale of offspring and manure to nourish crops and soil and increase crop yields.

Pigs need little land and can thrive on crop and garden by-product scraps. An average sow can provide a family with up to 16 piglets a year. Pigs usually double their three-pound birth weight in their first week and can grow to more than 200 pounds in six months!

Congratulations your hard work has changed the lives of many impoverished families all over the world.

EMPOWERMENT!

By: Pat Lacoste Lytle

Sometimes, this big old world may seem overwhelming to our youngsters.  Actually, it seems overwhelming to all of us at times.

Our PreK class in Metairie is currently involved in raising money, $120.00 to buy a pig for a family in a third world country.  Ms. Mary gathered information from Heifer Project and presented three choices to the class.  After considering the countries of Rwanda, India, and Honduras they voted on India.

Then then proceeded to talk about ways to earn the money.  Selling aluminum cans to the recycyling center earned the first $35.00.  The children really enjoyed recycyling and making a difference.  Now the recycling bin has become a permanent fixture in the classroom.  A bake sale is scheduled  for April 4th.  Other class projects are planned so they can reach this goal.

What a gift to our students!  They are learning that they can work toward a solution of a big problem.  They are being empowered–they are learning to look at a situation and respond to the challenge.  Yes!
